Own and read. The film was based on this book, it's supposedly everything the film should have been or whatever :)

FormatEdit

1997 paperback Orbit edition, got new as a present from Ed. 419 pages, 38 lines per page, 10 blank pages. 833542 characters in total[1], putting it at 433 'standard' pages.

JournalEdit

Got from Ed for my 23rd birthday (arrived direct from Amazon Sep 28th).

Started reading it on the 2nd of August 2011, after interrupting my run of sci-fi books (Blood Music, Snow Crash and this one) with the randomly-given-to-me Shogun.

Finished it on the morning of the 8th of August, in bed. It was good, but not great. Much better than I feared about halfway through when I pictured it validating religion like the film, but that was averted, and the ending was satisfactory. I enjoyed the vision of extraterrestrial intelligence, and the main character was likeable. I would probably have liked it a lot more if I hadn't read so much :P
